Jonathan Paul Koppenhaaver, also known as War Machine, was a former MMA fighter who amassed a record of 14 wins and 5 losses. He had short stints in the UFC and Bellator. War Machine’s claim to fame is when he was brought in as a replacement fighter at The Ultimate Fighter: Team Hughes vs Team Serra in 2007. At the Ultimate Fighter Season 6 Finale, he knocked out Jared Rollins to earn the Knockout of the Night and Fight of the Night honours.
War Machine’s fighting career is not what we know him for. Sometime in 2013, War Machine started dating Christine Mackinday, an adult film actress named Christy Mack. The relationship began passionately but became mentally and physically abusive, which led Mack to call off the relationship in 2014. On 8 August 2014, he attacked Mack and her new boyfriend, Corey Thomas, in Las Vegas. He attacked Thomas for ten minutes and let him go after swearing that he was not going to the authorities. Then, he turned his attention to Mack, whom he beat, cut with a knife and raped her.
War Machine assaulted her for two hours, and ultimately, she could escape through the balcony when War Machine was distracted. Mack went to her neighbour’s house and called 911. Mack was hospitalized shortly after, whereas War Machine evaded law enforcement for a week. He began posting pitying tweets about himself, which helped the authorities to track him by locating the IP address of his cell phone.
War Machine was charged with 36 counts of felony. These included multiple attempted murder charges, kidnapping, rape and sexual assault charges. His trial began after a long delay on February 2017. In March 2017, the jury found him guilty on 29 of 36 counts of felony, making him serve 36 years before he can be eligible for parole.
War Machine faces life sentence in prison for attacking his ex-girlfriend
Former MMA Fighter, War Machine attacked Christy Mack brutally. She suffered 18 broken facial bones, 12 missing teeth and a fractured rib. Due to her rib getting fractured, her liver was critically ruptured. This amount of brutality has never been known in the sport of MMA.
Mack came before the court during the trial to give her account of the events. Mack said, “I’ve been punched and kicked, smothered and bitten, raped and tortured. I was met with this more times than I can count, and I still cry every time I think about how it feels.”
The Justice System is notorious for not consistently delivering the expected justice. But in the case of War Machine, the Justice System came through. His attorneys tried their best to change the trial in their favour when they filed motions for a new trial as they claimed that the fighter was unconscious and unaware of his actions at the time of the rape incident. Judge Elissa Cadish denied the motion and indicated that an intense punishment was necessary. War Machine is now serving 36 years in prison. The earliest he can apply for parole is 2053.
