She made her first theatrical film appearance as Natalie “Nattie” Hillard in the 1993 comedy-drama film Mrs. Doubtfire, starring Robin Williams, Sally Field, Pierce Brosnan, Harvey Fierstein, and Robert Prosky.

Mara Wilson was awarded “Young Star of the Year” at the ShoWest Awards in 1995.

On March 10, 1995, her mother was diagnosed with breast cancer and she died on April 26, 1996.

Alongside Danny DeVito, Rhea Perlman, Embeth Davidtz, and Pam Ferris, Mara Wilson co-starred playing the titular role in the 1996 fantasy comedy film Matilda. For this performance, she won the YoungStar Award for “Best Performance by a Young Actress in a Comedy Film” as well as was nominated for a Young Artist Award and a Saturn Award.
