Leonid Brezhnev was a Russian politician. He led the USSR, as the General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, from 14 October, 1964 to 10 November, 1982. He was also the Chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Soviet Union, from 7 May, 1960 to 15 July, 1964, and again from 16 June, 1977 to 10 November, 1982.

Brezhnev was the son of Ilya Yakovlevich Brezhnev and Natalia Denisovna (Mazalova) Brezhneva. He was married to Viktoria Petrovna Denisova, with whom he had two children.

Brezhnev’s ethnicity was specified as Ukrainian in some documents, including his passport, and Russian in others. It is unclear if this is accurate.

Leonid’s paternal grandfather was Yakov Maximovich Brezhnev (the son of Maxim Brezhnev).

Leonid’s maternal grandfather was named Denis Mazalov.
