Sneed was raised in a musical household (his parents were both musicians at their church), and he developed an early interest in drumming as a result of his upbringing. Floyd received his first drum set as a present from his elder sister Maxine, who was at the time married to the musician-actor Tommy Chong. Floyd started playing in the Vancouver area as a member of Chong’s band, Little Daddy and the Bachelors, shortly after receiving the kit. In 1966, Sneed established his own band and relocated to Los Angeles, California, where he continues to perform today. During this time, he met a trio of singers (Danny Hutton, Chuck Negron, and Cory Wells) who had signed a deal with Dunhill Records and were on the lookout for supporting musicians. Sneed became a member of their newly formed band, Three Dog Night, which went on to achieve enormous commercial success in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Despite the disbanding of Three Dog Night in 1977, Sneed continued to perform and travel with various bands, including an extensive tour with The Ohio Players.
