Drake scores first UK number one as a lead artist

June 2024 · 2 minute read

Drake has finally scored his first UK number one as a lead artist.

His latest track, ‘One Dance’, which also features WizKid and Kyla, climbed 20 places in the chart this week and achieved combined sales of 72,000 copies. Drake previously reached number one in the UK as a featured artist on Rihanna’s ‘What’s My Name?’ in 2011.

Despite finally reaching the top spot this week, the song only managed tenth spot on the streaming charts, as it was only available on Apple Music for the first half of the sales window.

Drake’s number one means that he is the third Canadian to achieve a UK number one this year. Both Justin Bieber and Shawn Mendes have also topped the chart during 2016, making it only the second time in history for three Canadian acts to have a UK number one in a calendar year! The only other time this has happened was in 2014 when DVBBS, Keisza and MAGIC! hit the top spot.

Despite valiant attempts from Rihanna, Zara Larsson, Fifth Harmony and Sia over the past few weeks, ‘One Dance’ hitting the top spot makes Kyla the first female to have a UK number one this year! The track samples her 2009 hit ‘Do You Mind?’

Congratulations to Drake, WizKid and Kyla on their first UK number one! We can’t wait to see what else Drake has to offer when his new album Views from the 6 drops on April 29.
